It was a cloudy, foggy sail and motor, but the
temperature didn't dip below 69F, so the relatively short trip from Pemaquid to
The Basin on Friday (8/31) was very tolerable (as measured by the newly
created Nova Scotia cold factor tolerance scale).
This place is really unique. The naturally
formed entrance is extremely narrow and too shallow for us to go through at
low tide, but once we (meaning Don) maneuvered through the
lobster pot buoys and the ninety degree bend in the channel at
mid-tide, the basin revealed itself. It looked and acted
like a mill pond (picture below). Very nice. There were about 10
other sailboats anchored here and as we were going through the 'anchored and
settling in' process (oh yes, there is a process) a dinghy from a nearby boat
stopped by to invite us for cocktails (this is what boaters do, isn't that
fun?). They, and another sailboat, were from Newburyport, MA and were
vacationing in Maine for the last two weeks of summer. We went for
cocktails and ended up with dinner and birthday cake (one of the kids on
board turned 12).
Again with the generosity. Can you believe
it? We were thinking about it, and we haven't really run into any boaters
that appeared to be in anything but a good mood. This is particularly true
in the anchorages, and probably has something to do with the fact that most
of these boaters are vacationing, but still, no negative, sour, angry
people is a really nice thing.
