On Sunday (11/25), we sailed from Charlotte Amalie
on St. Thomas to Caneel Bay on St. John. This was a 15 mile trip that took
us close to 30 miles and 4 hours to complete. Lots of wind coming at us
from the wrong direction. So much for a relaxing island hop
sail.
Our bumpy sail was forgotten once we picked up
a mooring here though (picture 1). There is a beautiful white sand
beach within easy dinghy distance (picture 2), and only a few other
sailboats to share it with. It's now Tuesday and we have been here for
three days. Long enough for us to catch up on various boat projects
(replace the main sail outhaul line, rig a bungee to hold the computer in
place when we are under sail since our cockpit monitor bit the dust on the way
down here, investigate the reason for the depth meter's tendency to work
only occasionally, finish the laundry so that jeans, sweatshirts, etc. can be
packed away), and for Don to adopt a new schedule - projects in the
morning only and fun stuff in the afternoon (picture 3). Every
day we get at least one five minute rain shower, which sometimes generates
a rainbow. Today we got lucky (picture 4).
Our social schedule has also been pretty
good. Don has an old friend he used to live next door to in Rochester
(Fairport, really). This old friend, Peter, was a builder in the
Rochester area, and several years ago took an interest in building homes on St.
John. Peter spends most of his time on St. John now and we were able
to catch up with him yesterday for happy hour on the boat and then dinner
ashore. Tonight Peter is going to cook for us, which is quite
excellent. He has also offered us use of his internet access, which
is always a plus. Should be fun all the way around (picture
5).
Tomorrow we plan to move to another bay on the
north side of St. John. We'll stay there for a day or two and then
probably move on the to British Virgin Islands, starting with Tortola. All
in all, life is good.
