Return to normal.
Or as normal as possible when cooped up on a boat in the
middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Conditions have finally returned to what we would consider to
be normal trade wind sailing in the tropics. Sunny sky, puffy white
clouds, the occasional - but very manageable - rain squall, consistent wind, no
adverse current, gentle seas. Yes, this is more like it. The
equatorial countercurrent finally left us (or more likely we left it) early this
morning, and we've been enjoying more reasonable seas ever since.
Port-side lurches are far less violent, resulting in fewer unplanned slides
across the cockpit or cabin floors (and fewer colorful
expletives). We had our first sunset, moonrise and sunrise since leaving
St. Helena (all previous sunsets, moonrises and sunrises having been obliterated
by gray gloom), and a first rate star-gazing opportunity last night before the
half-moon made a showy appearance. We were hoping to finish this trip
with a few days of lovely, peaceful sailing, and with less than 48 hours to
go, it looks like we'll get our wish. Nice.
Day 21 progress - 166 miles.
344 miles to go.
