After we arrived, Don's brother Bill and his wife
Vicky did make it over to the Jersey side of the Hudson to see the boat.
They said it had been at least two years since they had ventured across the
river into New Jersey. Hard core New Yorkers? Yup, they
certainly are.
Later on Saturday (9/22) we all took a water taxi
back across the Hudson to the Financial District on Manhattan. The
first picture below was our view on our way across the river.
The two rather obvious blank spaces in the skyline between the buildings to
the far left is where the twin towers used to stand. Every
square inch of Manhattan is so packed with buildings that it seemed
very odd indeed to see the empty space.
We ended up in Little Italy where there was a
festival going on - it was like a home town carnival, but one that
was plopped down in the middle of crowded Manhattan streets. It came
complete with a Ferris Wheel and a stand selling 'Deep Fried
Oreos'. Yum, and I thought we could only get those during the Celtic
festival in Olcott, NY. We had an excellent dinner (Italian, of course)
and made our way back to Jersey City for the night.
On Sunday we went back over to Manhattan where we
met Bill and Vicky for lunch and went on a walking tour around the city.
The second picture below shows the Chrysler building - one of my favorites (and
is shown at the beginning of every 'Sex and the City' episode, so it must be
a cool building). We walked through Central Park, stopping for a rest
(3rd picture) in the Strawberry Fields area, which is dedicated to the memory of
John Lennon. After that, we decided a margarita walking tour of NY would
be more interesting than just a plain walking tour, so we stopped in a couple of
places along the way. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday
afternoon.
The fourth picture was our view from the dock
looking over the other boats in the marina to the Manhattan skyline across the
river. Jersey side or no, the view was tough to beat.
