We beat our estimated time of arrival by several
hours due to continued fast downwind sailing in high winds and arrived in
Savusavu at noon today (Thursday). It is still today and not yesterday or
tomorrow even though we sailed past 180 degrees longitude last night and
officially entered the eastern hemisphere from the western hemisphere.
This is the third time we've done this (second time going west to east),
but have yet to see the giant glowing blue line stretching from north to
south through the water. We are beginning to think it doesn't really
exist - which would be a huge disappointment for us.
We weren't the only ones to have sail trouble in
the high winds. Scallywag, a New Zealand catamaran, blew out their
'schreecher' (Kiwi for spinnaker) and Lady Kay ripped their genoa
(headsail). Some sailmaker in Fiji is going to be very happy.
We plan to stay on a mooring here at the Copra Shed
Marina for a few days. Not sure how long. Beyond dinner out tonight,
we really haven't discussed our plans for Fiji yet. As Don would say,
'You can't rush into these things!'
