Thursday 6th August
We left our lovely deserted bay - Sarakinicko
on the west side of Kastos and went to the mainland to the Sunsail base at
Vounaki Marina as we decided it was time for some shore power and showers!
However although the marina was pleasant enough there was no power so it was
back to using the generator again to get the batteries topped up. The setting
was very pleasant with high hills to the north and green covered slopes. The
local town of Palairos had gas and an ATM and we were able to get some fuel from
a road tanker that came to the marina for another boat. The Sunsail staff were
all friendly and helpful and the beach taverna had good value snacks. We met a
very nice Greek couple (Mike and Maria) on a small MV who were able to give
us some useful information about more local anchorages as well as some details
of sailing in the gulf of Athens. The next day we left for Spartakhora. This is
a delightful bay on the north of Meganisi and there are a variety of options
regarding moorings. We went to the floating pontoon belonging to the Taverna
where we had power and water (at last)! Fortunately Mike and Maria knew the
owners and had called in advance to book a spot. We had a rather disconcerting
moment on arrival as we tried to berth because the prop didn't open so we had no
forward or reverse thrust for about 3 minutes - only the bow thruster!
Eventually it seemed to right itself and we squeezed into our place with the
help for Padros in his dinghy. There were lazy-lines here so need to drop the
anchor. The floating pontoon was subject to violent movement when waves came
from ferries and then the wind got up from the NE in the afternoon so getting on
and off the boat became a bit of a rollercoaster ride.Nonetheless the setting
was lovely and we made use of the Taverna for cold drinks and had supper there
in the evening. There was also a WASHING MACHINE!!! I was able to get the
bedding done for 7 Euros! We spent more time with Mike and Maria and have now
got some good places to visit on our way through the Gulf of Corinth and hope to
meet up with them in Poros in early September.

Sivota 38 37.4N 20 49.0E
Before leaving Spartakhora we walked up to the tiny
village to see the views which were spectacular despite it being rather a misty
morning. From the top of the hill you can see Levkas and the Onassis island of
Skorpios to the north and then to the SW the end of Cephalonia and part of
Ithaki. We motored south having said our farewells to Mike and Maria (Eclipse)
and passed between the islands of Meganisi and Levkas along the south coast of
the latter and then into the long inlet and bay of Sivota. We found a good spot
to anchor and had a refreshing swim in water that showed a temperature of 31
degrees (I'm sure this can't have been right!).
We have been able to log onto a WIFI connection
here so will get these messages off today. Hope to get ashore tonight to explore
this little place.
