We had left Sicily in fine sunny weather with light winds as per the weather forecast. However as the day wore on we had increasing cloud and the wind increased significantly as did the swell. By midnight it was blowing a good force 5 and a swell of 1.5 to 1.8 metres on the port quarter – not a comfortable motion. We had reefed down before dark so had a small main and about 1/4 of the genoa unfurled. Good speed was made.
