Friday 29th May
We left Porto Colom at 0845, hoisted the main and set off up
the coast motor-sailing into a head wind. It was a beautiful day and we kept hoping
the wind would free so we could sail but this did not happen until we passed
Cabo del Freu north of Puerto Ratjada! The swell was negligible despite the
very strong winds of yesterday so the boat cut through the water cleanly. We
saw very few other boats until we approached the bay of Alcudia where there
were several out for an afternoon jaunt. We decided to furl the headsail in
good time as we approached our proposed anchorage only to find it was jammed
again! We tried everything all to no avail so decided to take the whole thing
down but couldn’t get the darn thing to drop either! In the end we
unwound the furling line by hand it had somehow got over-riding turns so we
couldn’t free it. Rob spent at least 45 minutes on his tummy sorting it
out and then we had to furl the sail by hand! So tomorrow’s job will be
to try and sort it all out!
We are now on a mooring buoy in a lovely tranquil spot about
a mile north east of the marina at Puerto Pollensa. The buoys are part of the
Posidonia project like the one we used in Espalmador. The bay is very sheltered
behind a peninsula called Punta de la Avanzada and we are directly below a
rather splendid castle (privately owned so no landing to visit it!) We did get
a bit of a shock as we approached what we thought was a suitable buoy one
second the depth was 3.9 and then it was 1.5!! needless to say we reversed out
double quick and went to find another buoy. Unfortunately very few have pick up
floats which makes retrieving the mooring line very tricky. We found another
buoy with a float in 3.8m of water but later watched a large ‘gin
palace’ attempt to pick-up at least 5 different buoys without floats all
to no avail!!
We hope to get ashore to explore Pollensa tomorrow.
