Methana

Our friends Wiz and Watson arrived on the ferry from Pireaus on Tuesday evening at 2030 and once settled in we had a late supper at a tavern near to boat. The following morning we did a quick shop for fresh produce and then headed out to anchor again in Russian Bay where we spent the day swimming and relaxing. It was a wonderful warm and calm day and the sea temperature was 24.8C. We had a BBQ on the Cobb that evening and all felt in true holiday mood. On Thursday Watson went up the mast to fix a block at the top of the forestay which had fallen down; he also checked the rigging for us as he came down in particular the connections of the spreaders to the mast. All was fine and we set off for Methana just after 1100. This small spa town lies on the south east side of the same named peninsula which is attached to the Peloponese coast due north of Poros. We motored the 7 miles and after making a very cautious entry to the tiny and shallow marina found a place with a buoyed mooring line and duly berthed the boat. It is a very quiet and sleepy place but after an evening stroll and a pre -dinner drink we discovered what would be going on for the Greek Orthodox Easter. We were able to get connected to the power supply having called Marina the harbour manager whose number was posted on the window of her portahut office at the north end of the harbour. The sulphur smells waft intermittently but one soon gets used to it. We had hoped to find some hot springs in the sea just beyond the marina but discovered these were not close bye. We had a mezes meal at a tavern on the corner where the Good Friday procession passed us and witnessed about 500 people following the much decorated icon as it progressed around the town. As it was so hot and airless in this tiny marina we decided to leave on Saturday morning and find a cooler anchorage.
