Kekova Roads and Kas, Fethiye and
Gocek

We sailed across from Alanya (well motor-sailed as
usual) and spent a couple of days at anchor off Kekova before heading for Nuri's
beach bar
near to Kas. Here we spent 3 nights and enjoyed
meeting up with Val and Steve whom Rob had met in Alanya in August. From there
we sailed round to Fetiye
and were passed by Sarvanna the Hanse 53 that had
been with us in the EMYR. We exchanged waves and were pleased to meet up with
them later the next day
when the joined us at anchor off Fetiye marina. We
took the dinghy ashore and explored this large town - first impressions were
good - the marina was well presented
and the facilities excellent all set close to the
town. We are not surprised that June and Steve our friends from Lagos (2008)
have decided to take a winter contract here.
Having stocked up at the very good produce market
held along the side of the river we headed off to the bays to the
south west of Gocek. Here we really began to see
why people rave about cruising in Turkey. The
choice of anchorages was vast and each bay had crystal clear water in shades of
turquoise with trees right down to the shore line
and not too many other boats .In some of the bays
were orange mooring buoys with stanchions concreted into the rocks on the shore
- so no need to anchor. We have become
quite good at the routine of backing in to a chosen
spot and either Jacky swimming with a line or Rob going in the dinghy to
secure us to a convenient rock or bollard!
We spent two nights in Tomb bay so called because
of the ancient Rock Tombs carved in the cliff faces by the Carian Dynasty who
were around before 400BC! We then moved
to a small group of islands in the centre of Skopea
Limani called Yessica Adalari where we picked up a buoy and tied a stern line
ashore. We met up with new friends on Miyagi Moon
Albert and Sheena and their parrot Charlie, had
drinks with them on Arwen and on another night supper on their boat.
We enjoyed a week in this area including a couple
of nights at anchor off the main town of Gocek where we were able to replenish
fresh food supplies before heading north west again
for the bay of Marmaris. Our final night was in
Wall bay again a delightful spot which has a resident large Turtle that swims by
occasionally and has a good look at who is anchored
in it's bay!
The sail north west to Marmaris was only remarkable
by the wind force - again on the nose but at times up to 24 knots so we had to
reef and close all the hatches as we were taking spray.
We arrived after lunch and anchored in the bay
opposite Marmaris yat marina and had a quiet couple of nights here.
