Victoria Marina, St Peter Port, Guernsey

The day's activities have rather faded into insignificance this last hour. We had a very pleasant afternoon on the warm sunny beach with a plan to leave the marina around 9pm and spend the night at the pontoons outside the marina in order to escape in the morning and catch the fair tide back to Cherbourg.

However we left the pontoon, going very gently backwards, then Bol put the engine into forwards and nothing happened. As he was going so slowly we were able to fend off the wall behind without crushing Geoff the Aries windvane into the harbour wall. Then we man-handled her back into the pontoon we had just vacated with the help of our neighbour and once securely tied up we used the GoPro to take some underwater photos of the prop shaft. We couldn't see anything! Then Bol very bravely got into the freezing cold water and returned a few seconds later to tell me that there was no propeller at all!

No propeller on the end of the prop shaft. Gulp.

So our minds are in a bit of a whirlwind as to know what to do next.  Not just the 'what ifs' having just come through the Alderney Race, but what on earth to do next. We have dug his scuba tank out and he will see if he can find it under the boat in the morning, on the sea bed. It was certainly on when we arrived here last week!
