Bryher
A check on Windy.com first thing confirmed the 2 knots across the deck would remain today. We therefore motored TC from Old Grimsby Harbour around the headland to anchor in New Grimsby Harbour, this enabled us to visit the much recommended Bryher Island.
We had been promised rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and untamed Island beauty and were not disappointed. Also coming out of season meant we were virtually alone walking the footpaths, the few folks we did meet were all very welcoming.
Even before seeing the many ship wrecked figureheads on display in the Abbey gardens yesterday, our minds have been focussing on the numerous rocks surrounding the Islands. It was therefore heartening to see Bishop Rock lighthouse through the mist, just over 4 miles south west of us. It made a lonely sight but wow, such an essential landmark, we’ve just been reading how they built it in the 1850s, a totally awesome achievement.
We are now anchored at the entrance to New Grimsby Harbour, a stone’s throw from Cromwell’s Castle on Tresco which we were able to visit after a scramble up the rocky shoreline. Another incredible building achievement dating back to 1651. Courtesy of English Heritage, it is freely available to climb inside right to the top. It is in excellent condition and gives a fine view from the harbour entrance north right over the sound to St Mary’s harbour.
