Victoria Marina, St Peter Port, Guernsey

Today began with a very loud bang. I initially thought it was an explosion or similar but by the time I had turned around towards the sound, I saw a yacht shuddering from impacting the sill at the entrance to Victoria Marina at a fairly quick speed. Her three crew were flat on their faces on deck and the skipper was wrapped around his wheel. Horror of horrors, he had slammed into the sill having miscalculated the tide, what a disaster. Word quickly spread around the marina that she had knocked out the entire contents below decks and shifted the keel. As the Harbour Master laconically put it ... "that's what insurance is for".....and .... "it happens every week" !

On a lighter note, we have had another very pleasant day here in the marina. Isabelle was befriended by a German child on another cruising boat so they have been crabbing off the pontoon, communicating with nods, smiles and hand signals.

It is spring tide so we went for a little explore to see the sill at low water and found steps leading right down into the harbour. The sea bed was sandy, so, unlike Newtown and Yarmouth, we were able to walk on the sand out to the sill itself which was fun. It was quite surreal to look up at the yachts in the basin and a little creepy to know that at high water there would be 9 metres of water where we were standing.

The day's highlight was a very lovely happy hour on board Pat and Trevor's beautiful yacht on the pontoon nearby. Always fun to see other cruising yachts above and below decks, and inspiring to listen to stories :-)

A few more days here, and hopefully start exploring the Island these next few days.
