...in the study, with the candle stick holder: or didn't you play cluedo as a child? Anyway I'm not saying who done it back in the sixteenth centuary, suffice it to say that it is a very saisfactory conclusion, perhaps in the mould of the last few pages of One Hundred Years of Silence: the end of an epoch.

More pressing is the weather, specifically the wind, which is of course very rarely entirely to the sailors' satisfaction, and which for two days now has been tediously light. Just now there is enough to sail, but I can't go exactly where I want to go without the sails banging themselves about, so it is a sort of dance involving downwind tacking from time to time. Still anything is better than no wind at all, which seems to happen at about 02.00 each night.

Progress has slowed quite a bit, but not to worry, we are well up to schedule, and maybe my benign mood is fostered not just by Pamuk's authorship but by the aroma of fresh baking bread which is due out of the oven in 10 minutes time. Typically I am still dithering over whether to put into the French Islands or not, but a decision does not have to be made until tomorrow, or quite possibly the day after, at this rate of progress. There is masses of food on board, though fresh stuff is getting short: the St Helena potatoes all went rotten, and my last batch of green tomatoes are about to ripen all at once; no sign yet of scurvy however, and still several tins of mushy peas as a future treat!
