Highlights of New York - 24th June - 18th July 2011 Part A

Having settled nicely into our anchorage on the Hudson River, we went ashore on most days and left the dinghy at the 79th Boat Basin.
Then it was off to explore the delights of NYC! One mode of
transport we took to get a really good feel of the City, was a trip on a
classic New York double decker bus. A 72 hour ticket allowed us to
‘hop-on, hop off’ and this also included a visit to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis
Island and a guided 2 hour ferry trip around Manhattan; not bad! We also
purchased 5 day metro tickets allowing us to jump on either the bus or the
subway, both of which stopped in the centre of Manhattan and only a 5 minute
walk away from the anchorage. We had a busy, yet brilliant time during our 3 week stay in
New York and our senses were always being stimulated by something
different! Here are some of the most memorable
moments.....
A great narrative
given on Harlem Gospel tour, which included a visit to a Sunday Gospel service
and brunch at the Cotton Club. The tour took us past many ‘brownstone’ houses in
Harlem (now a desired area to live in).
    The

Shops, Shops
and more Shops!! 42nd St. was just full of them and we also visited
Macy’s, which is the largest store the world. Naturally, we couldn’t resist
buying one or two items! We also just had to pay a visit to the largest
McDonalds in the world. You could also guarantee meeting the odd nice
policeman on horseback!
      A stroll through
Central Park on a Sunday afternoon where all kinds of activities were happening,
including beach volleyball and professional musicians playing to anyone and
everyone!
  A walk on The
Highline (a disused railway track, now transformed into a ‘green’ elevated
walkway above Manhattan). One of the many attractions which was free and one of
my favourites!

     I loved
the style of the Flatiron Building, which has a uniquely narrow triangular
footprint that resembles the prow of a massive ship
.
Other favourites
include the Chrysler Building and the Guggenheim Museum
