Horta - 27 June

We have been very busy the last few days, painting some street art and enjoying Horta.  It is traditional for boats to leave their imprint on the marina and the walls are festooned with the work of other boats.  Some of it is new and some is old and faded.  It's easy to spend a couple of hours wandering around the marina admiring the art and spotting that of boats we know.  Many of the paintings have been added to year on year as boats have returned.  It made us realise how many sailors are out cruising the world.

From a design that the children came up with, which they drew out on paper, ours ended up like this:

We are next to the one by Temula B and just above Barn Owl's design.  Juliet did most of the work.  Alice and Pip helped with some of the painting but tended to get carried away and slosh the paint everywhere, and then tread on it.  The rough surface made lettering difficult.  It took several days to finish and we were full of respect for those boats that had done very large and detailed ones.

Horta itself is a pretty, old fashioned town, with friendly locals.

View of the town from our berth in the marina

Horta backstreet, with the peak of the neighbouring island, Pico, in the distance.

Geoff leaves us to head back to England (by plane) today, and we are leaving Faial to sail to Graciosa, in convoy with Wild Alliance and Temula B.  Barn Owl left for England this morning.
