Saturday 23rd May 2015. SW2 and S3 lovely and sunny. 10 hours, 43.2nm. 2.9 engine hours.

A nice lie in to catch the North going stream. We can’t be too early in the Sound of Luing where the whirpools and currents have to be respected as we pass the Gulf of Corryvreckan between Jura and Scarba. The lovely light airs from astern are perfect for the chute….if only it will unfurl. No it will not and so down it comes for manual unfurling of the massive twists. 90 mins later we are finally cruising.

We decided not to go to Kerrera Marina at Oban, as we usually do, and save the £35 by anchoring. We chose Loch Spelve as the tide was favourable for entry along its narrow channel. We still had 2kts with us though so full attention was required. Chilly evening and almost frosty - it’s nearly June for goodness sake.

Tricky entrance
