As luck would have it, Nige reckons that most transmission problems are in fact linkage problems; I investigated this line of reasoning and discovered that we have a bung gear shift cable. Anyone who has been with us in the last year or so will recall that the gear shift had been getting a bit stiff - it finally gave up the ghost when I tried to put it into neutral yesterday to start the engine while still sailing (we have taken to putting the engine into reverse gear to make the propellor feather when under sail). I may have given it a bit of help when it refused to budge... Anyway the problem is down to an eight y.o. cable which is beyond the help of WD40 (the sailor's friend).
Today we had a bit of a slow start, did some housework and then walked across the bridge into town to do some shopping. Gisborne is a pretty town, and at the moment is very ht and dry - the hottest day since we have been in NZ.
More exploring tomorrow - the only problem with our gear cable is that nothing specialist will be open until Wednesday, and it is unlikely the item will be on the shelf, so the earliest we will be out of here may be Friday. Still, could be caught in worse places...you can see our dilemma:
