Gremlins Banished

Good news the gremlins in the electronics have been found and banished. Over the last week the electronics have been getting more and more wobbly. It’s like having a small animal in the system running around and randomly turning off data ..often just as you need it . So just as you are approaching a shallow patch the gremlins run along the cable and boom the depth gauge goes blank. Or just as you need boat speed or wind angle the gremlin is there instead and those numbers disappears. Then the animal runs off to somewhere else in the Network and the data is back. Worst is the autopilot as when that looses data it alarms and says it need recalibrating so you are forever sat at the helm cancelling alarms. Anyway I asked a few experts and it was Adam Munday from AM Marine who came up with the solution and therefore gets the competence prize of the week ….change the terminators on the NMEA cable. Sure enough that was where the gremlin was nesting right at the end of the cable, probably in the one behind the mast instruments that was a bit wet and soggy. My protective tape had come off and we all know electronics and water is a bad combination …..even if they are designed to be waterproof! Since fitting new ends ( and drying the cable with the edge my pyjamas as i wasn’t yet dressed during this DIY ) the gremlins have not reappeared . Hurrah to Adam!

To celebrate we went off the snorkel the wreck of the RMS Rhone. This is a mail ship that encountered a hurricane in the 1800s and was smashed against the rocks with all souls lost. The wreck is remarkable as you can still clearly see the propeller, prop shaft or mast and other parts of the ship. Of course it’s covered in coral and reef fish as nature reclaims it and we saw a turtle grazing on the algae.

Tonight is the last night of our BVI cruise so we went back to Cooper Island for a last supper. This was the resort where they have now showers and we showered in a bucket last time. We didn’t want to recreate that so we all enjoyed the last of the water and had 3 showers aboard Purple Mist. With all our various shampoos, shower gels and conditioner laid out Claire did say it was a bit like a spa. Her expectations have somewhat reduced after 3 months at sea. We finished off with a face pack to round out the spa experience.

We have now headed back to Nanny Cay on Tortola to start preparing for the next inshore regatta starting Tuesday with a Round the island race. Saoirse has left us moving back to skipper Taz over to the USVI for the St Thomas regatta. We will be joined by Thalita and Sam at the end of the week so we are 4up for the inshore racing.
