Day 15: Celebration it’s Cascais
Finally after 15 days sailing we reach Cascais. Can you believe JOG did a race here once? I wonder if it was non stop? ….no doubt some of my sailing friend took part and can enlighten me.
Anyway Our night in Peniche wins the prize for the worst marina experience ever. For a start we were rafted 3 out so it was an obstacle course extraordinaire to reach S/Y Olliver for post dinner drinks. Then just as I got to sleep the local discotheque struck up with some Euro-pop trash at max volume until 4am. Once that died down there was about 1 hr to sleep before the fishing fleet of Peniche departed at full speed and full wash past our pontoon …. Clearly the 3kt speed limit doesn’t apply to fishing boats
Anyway only 40NM today so it was a lie in for a 8am departure.
Highlight of the day was our home cooked Norwegian fish lunch Fiskekrateng which was delicious.
Meanwhile we are yet again on full Orca alert as there has been 3 attacks in the past 5 days in this area.
The last headland had a big wind acceleration (thanks Richard Palmer for the warning) so we hit 10kts speed on white sails. Talking of sails this was the first day the repair kit was not needed, clearly so much black tape has been used it’s virtually a carbon sail….not!
Cascais is swanky. Marina reception was like a smart hotel and the Marina complex is very upmarket. I’m looking forward to chilling here for 3 nights …my credit card is not !
Finally we found the home of the assorted lobster pots which range from well marked brightly colours flags to pots that stay disguised , blending into the sea with white and blue flags. These ones leap out at you at the last possible moment and are almost more worrying than the Orcas .
