Late morning we were motoring through the narrow passage between Little and
Great Camanoe islands and then on to Guana island. The prettiest bay on
Guana has a private resort on it and landing in a dinghy is not allowed, except
that you can go ashore anywhere in the BVI’s, private or not, up to the high
water mark. As there is very little difference between high and low water
here it’s a mute point trying to insist on landing rights at private
places.
Guana (or iguana) gets it’s name from the profile of this rock sticking out
from the cliff at it’s north west tip:-
We sailed gently downwind under genoa only along the north coast of Tortola
and passed Sandy Cay, which to us is ‘Thursday Island’, the nickname we gave it
on our honeymoon and which is the reason behind our boat name. A lovely
moment.
Passing Thursday Island with other islands in the background:-
Thursday Island is only suitable as a day anchorage and as it was getting
late in the day we postponed our visit and continued to Little Harbour (really a
bay) on the island of Jost van Dyke. Little Harbour is quite deep and is
one of the few places in the BVI’s where in past visits we have picked up a
mooring buoy in preference to anchoring. Things are rather different in
your own boat as you know the quality of your anchor and chain and we found a
space to anchor at the head of the bay.
There are three restaurants around the small bay, Abes by the Sea, Harris’s
and Sydney’s Peace and Love. We usually go to Sydney’s so went ashore that
evening for a lobster dinner. Sydney’s has an ‘honour’ bar where you serve
yourself and write down what you have had in the book provided. On our
first visit Sydney sat down with us and made a bit of a fuss when he discovered
it was our honeymoon.
I remember asking him whether the owners of the places got on well as they
were all so close to each other, especially Harris’s which is only yards away
but which was currently closed due to damage from a recent hurricane. He
said that he and Harris were very good friends once but it changed for some
reason a few years ago. I asked if it was because of competition and he
said no, it all seemed to change when my son murdered his. Erm, how did
that happen. Well, they had an argument so my son killed his with a
speargun. He’s paying his price in jail now so that’s no reason for Harris
to be so cold with me. No of course not, gulp.
Sadly Sydney passed away 5 years ago and we were well looked after by his
two daughters, Strawberry and Janet who also confirmed their brother was out of
jail. I spoke to both brothers at some point but have no idea which was
‘the one’ and didn’t feel inclined to ask!
Sydney’s Peace and Love the following morning. Not very inspiring but
full of character:-
