Distance Run 148 Miles
We set off about 10am and managed to sail for the
first 4.5hrs - about 25 miles only. Then it was engine all the way.
As we got closer to Gibraltar Straits we found the current against us was
running at about 1.5 knots. It has been negligible in most places in
the Mediterranean. The water from the rivers around the Mediterranean
basin is not enough to replace the water lost by evaporation so there is a
constant inflow coming through the Straits to compensate.
It was quite damp overnight and then misty as we
neared 'the Rock'. We were stunned by the amount of shipping anchored
around Gibraltar waiting to unload their cargo. Their anchor lights were
all visible in the dark but seeing the size of the things as dawn broke was
fascinating.
We reached
Queensway Quay Marina at 10am, exactly 24
hours after we left. We had a brief nap and pottered about during the day
and had a nice Sunday Roast dinner in the evening. The first in ages and
all the better for it.
