The anchor was lifted at around 8.30 am and we motored clear of Mayreau and
unfurled the sails. This was the view of Saline Bay as we left:-
After about 8 miles we passed the island of Canouan which has very little
on it apart from an expensive resort built by Donald Trump. Just to the
north of the island the seas were rather lumpy but after about half an hour they
settled down and we had a good sail to Admiralty Bay on Bequia. We
anchored soon after 1pm near Nanook II and settled down for lunch in the cockpit
taking in the view.
We left a telephone message with an engineer, Peter Simpson, who comes
highly recommended, and over the next few days he came to listen to and later
investigate our engine buzzing/ticking noise. The noise seemed to stop
whenever the alternator belt was removed so the main suspects were either the
engine freshwater pump (as opposed to the saltwater pump) or the alternator
bearings. Peter felt there was play in the water pump and that the best
bet would be to visit the main Volvo engine distributor for the Caribbean,
Inboard Diesel in Martinique, for confirmation and repair. He also felt
the engine was safe to use - ‘probably’. I got Peter back on Friday to
help me change the engine stop solenoid as I didn’t have the right tools for the
restricted access.
On Tuesday Anne and Peter on Spice of Life arrived which was a surprise as
we had heard that they had had a fraught time in Grenada and might not be going
anywhere. We also learnt that Smart Move and Mai Tai were in the bay so it
was a little like being in Grenada all over again. Sure enough two games
of Mexican Train with the above suspects and Nanook were arranged ashore during
the week.
A picture of Admiralty Bay taken from the ‘pointy end’ showing the recently
re-caulked’ teak decks. Windsurf is at anchor in the distance just to the
left:-
A better picture of the Windsurf. We had a very nice cruise on this
boat a few years ago:-
