Lin was keen to visit the local market and was told
that Friday was the best day to go. My presence was not wanted which was a
relief and Lin had a happy hour strolling around unpestered.

This is the bit I'm glad I missed:-
Now that is a serious lump of tuna! The black
fish in front are 'espada' (scabbard fish). They live below 800 metres and
rise to 500 metres at night to feed which is when Madeira's fishermen make their
catch. As the fish are drawn to the surface the decompression kills
them. They are a great local delicacy:-
