Sunday 24 to Thursday 28 March 2013
We recently bought an iPad to make going ashore by
dinghy to check emails a little easier. We have hardly used it so far and
decided on Sunday to download Skype in the hope it will be more straightforward
to use than on the laptop. There were one or two little trip-ups along the
way so I tested it by Skyping Mike on his iPad.
It was a good test as Mike was so
far away:-
Mark had recommended an app for star gazing
which I had installed. Mike has a different one so in the evening we
compared them. Whilst we were both totally absorbed by what we were doing
Lin thought it would make a good Kodak moment.
Two guys looking at computer screens instead of the
sky:-
On Monday I went to a Radiography unit to
have an 'intravenous pylogram'. No, I didn't know either, but it was an
injection of 'contrast' into the blood followed by a succession of X-Rays down
the body to look for any blockages in the urinary system which might be caused
by large kidney stones. This had only been arranged last Thursday and was
another example of medical care being accessed much more quickly than in the UK
and the X-Rays and report were completed in a few hours.
Most the staff were either from Trinidad or India
but the the work was undertaken by an English nurse who asked for a chat
when I was leaving. She met me outside and said she wanted to see if I
could give her a perspective on something. Erm....., yes, OK. In the
following 40 minutes I got to learn her recent life history, her isolation as
the only English person working there, how she was hated, had moved back to the
UK for a couple of years to escape, and then to escape England moved back to
Barbados where she and her Bajan husband have a house. All very
interesting and I felt sorry for her but was taken aback when at the end of
all this she said 'So, what do you think I should do - move back
to England? change jobs? sell the house? rent it out? stick at the job? etc
etc. It's a good job I had been listening and she must have been
so desperate for the chance to talk to another Brit - poor thing.
Anyway, I gave my penny worth and she gave me a
hug, said thank you and said sorry she should have been looking after
me. Perhaps it was longer than 40 minutes!
Next day I saw my doctor who confirmed that there
were no signs of any large kidney stones and the recent episodes seemed to have
cleared them from the system.
On Tuesday evening we went to 'Champers' restaurant
on the south coast for a nice meal with Mike and Carol:-
On Thursday evening we were out again for a curry
at Judy and Peter's house. Another lovely evening in good
company.
Peter, Carol, Judy and Mike:-
And again with Lin instead of Peter:-
