We have decided we want to get down to Grenada to
look at the two boatyards which specialise in hauling out boats for the
hurricane season. If we don't like those we will then go further
south to Trinidad. Trinidad is usually less affected by hurricanes
but is wetter and more humid in summer and both personal and property security
is said to be pretty bad.
The anchor was raised about 10am and we sailed out
of Admiralty Bay in Bequia passing Mustique in the distance and much later on we
passed the Tobago Keys. As we passed the island of Mayreau we
looked into Saltwhistle Bay where we have spent some nice days on charter
holidays. There is a nice little restaurant ashore.
Saltwhistle Bay:-
We continued down to Union Island where we anchored
behind Newlands Reef off the town of Clifton. The reef protected us from
the waves but allows the cooling wind through.
We remember there used to be a man living on this
small island but it seems his humble abode was damaged in a hurricane so he is
no longer there. The islands of Tobago Keys are in the
distance:-
In the background is Palm Island, which is
private and houses an expensive resort. You might just be able to see the
narrow passage between the sandy strips on Union and Palm Islands that we
sailed through to get here:-
Sunday was grey and I went ashore to have a look
but everything was closed. One lady explained it was quiet because 'we
doin' church today'. The rain came down in buckets again so I
sheltered in the restaurant of the Bourganvillia Hotel for a couple of
hours.
This is the most southerly of the 'St Vincent and
Grenadines' islands and we need to clear out of here before we sail down to
Carriacou, which is one of the Grenada group of islands.
