Loud music was playing on the shore for another island event which
continued until 2.30 am which was another test for our sense of humour. A
weather forecast showed that we would not be leaving before Thursday so we
settled back and enjoyed the stay in Les Saintes. On Monday evening we had
a lovely birthday dinner ashore at ‘Au Bon Vivre’ before they shut for a month
because of the low season.
Tuesday and Wednesday was spent topping up with provisions, putting water
in the boat tanks and generally relaxing. We snorkelled over a wreck which
looks like it is an old small ferry. It’s the first time we have looked at
a wreck and we must say it’s a little creepy although we assume there had been
no loss of life.
Sure enough on Thursday the wind strength had dropped to let us sail to
Pointe a Pitre on Guadeloupe. We had delayed departure until midday so
that the tide would not be running against the wind which provided a smoother
sea state. This paid off and the sailing was comfortable most of the time
although the downside was that both the wind and tide were against us which made
progress slow. After 20 miles we anchored in the river off the town.
The view was somewhat industrial but the anchorage was calm:-
It makes a change from turquoise seas off golden beaches!
Again there are some strong winds coming so on Friday we took the dinghy
into the nearby marina to check the facilities and booked a hire car for 3 days
from tomorrow. |
