Distance run 32 miles

We left the saltwater creeks of Tavira about 11.40 so that we can get through the shallows near high water.  The route west to Culatra is only about 15nm but the wind was against us.  We cannot sail directly into the wind - the closest we can get is about 40-45 degrees.  This increases the distance by about 50%.  Unfortunately the tide was against us as well so our course over the ground was not even 60 deg from the wind.  This meant our 15nm journey became 32nm.

It was a good sail in relatively flat water and we sailed at a good speed of 6 to 7 knots most of the time.  So, with apologies to Morecambe and Wise, we sailed all the right knots, just not necessarily in the right direction.
