Wherever you go in Lanzarote there are references to the island's most famous artist, Cesar Manrique.  There is seldom any mention of any other person of significance from the island which left me feeling that they were rather over egging it.  He was responsible for designing a lot of the natural tourist attractions in Lanzarote so we visited his house which was opened to the public after his death in 1992.

Expecting a traditional house with a few of his paintings and sculptures inside we were blown away by his 'house' and it made me realise why they were making such a fuss.  He had bought a plot of land ie, a bed of lava rock like most of the island, but this plot had several of the blow holes from the original eruption out of which he made a number of rooms below ground level and connected them with tunnels.  The place was fascinating and we were all stunned by his imagination.  The lower rooms were much cooler than the surface.
