Rigging

We mentioned previously that our new standing
rigging was showing signs of rust. As the summer has progressed it is
clear it is not just signs but a level of rust we have not had previously
in our 11 year old rigging. As the whole point of changing the rigging was
to increase our safety over a 3 week Atlantic crossing this is rather
disappointing.
We took some photographs and emailed them to Ilhan
Demir, the contractor who did the work in Turkey in May and June this
year. The rigging is guaranteed by Demir Marine for 12 months but Demir
Marine is closing down after a dispute with the marina! We know Ilhan is
an honourable person so we hope to get a reasonable reponse.
Some friends on another boat had also had rigging
problems. The wire is made out of 19 strands and it turned out that one or
two of the strands had not been marine grade stainless steel and had
rusted. Demir changed theirs without question and he subsequently changed
his wire supplier. Fingers crossed.
For those who are interested here are some
shots:-
The fact the rust is in spots is encouraging as it
suggests the possibility of surface contamination rather than substandard
wire:-
The rust has run down the wire but you would only
expect to see any at all after several years:-
There iwas enough to pass through the thread on to
the base fittings:-
