A close up of the centre of the bearing:-

Some scoring but no obvious wear until the bearing is slipped back on the rudder stock around which it is a very sloppy fit..

The 'skipper' consults with Dennis about the bearing which we have just slid on to the rudder stock:-

This is the 'case' which holds the bearing and is glassed into the hull:-

There is some wear but no obvious damage to the case itself which still sits soundly in the hull. It is safe to carry on until we can get a new bearing.  Perhaps we might reach Paul, Vicki and Hannah after all !

I made a few phone calls to the Bavaria Yacht dealers in Spain, Portugal and the UK with the exact measurements of the bearing but still none were held in stock.

We put the rudder back in place and lowered the boat back into the water about 4.30pm.

We are both tired and relieved the day is over.  We at least know the limits of the problem even if we are no closer to resolving it.  We went out and had a very nice dinner in the evening.
