Distance 18 miles

We left Ayamonte Marina about 10.15 and motored down the Guadiana River the 4 miles to the entrance where there is a sand bar.  We cannot pass over this at low water (we need a depth of 2 metres) so we had left it until about 3 hours after which was fine.

Once out at sea the wind was much calmer than the blast we were getting downriver.  We put up the sails and switched off the engine (always a lovely moment as everything goes quiet) and had a nice sail in 15 knots of breeze with the wind on the beam.  After an hour the wind changed so that it came from the direction we wanted to go!  Murphy's law.  This increases the time somewhat but it was still all very pleasant on a sunny day and quiet sea.  One of those rare occasions.

We arrived in Tavira at about 2pm at around high water.  We can only get inside the entrance about 1 hour either side of high water so this worked out well.

It's only a difference of about 2 metres but the channel narrows dramatically
