We didn't leave until about 1pm as it is only a
short trip to Portimao. The forecast was for very light headwinds from the
west so we expected to be running the engine all the way. Fortunately what
wind there was came from the south and southwest so wasn't 'on the
nose'.
Although it was light, only about 10 knots of wind,
it was coming from ahead of the beam which meant the wind we experienced is
increased by our boat speed. It turned out to be a fantastic sail.
There was a boat behind us on a similar
track. Through the binoculars we could see it was an Oyster (the Bentley
of sailing yachts) and seemed a bit bigger than us. Race on! The
definition of a boat race is: 'any two boats that can see eachother'.
Using our new AIS we could see data transmitted from the other boat showing her
boat speed and direction. She was sailing about half a knot
faster than us so it was tweaking time. We got our speed up to about the
same as her but mostly 0.2 knots slower. I am happy to report that he
didn't get past us by the time we got to Portimao although she definitely would
have done in the end.
This is a picture of our plotter when we arrived in
the estuary near Portimao:-
It shows that our cumulative mileage on this boat
is 12000 nautical miles, 110000 of which have been done since we left the UK at
the end of 2004.
