Distance Run 10nm
We paid up at the marina and left at 11 am, sailing west under genoa only
along the south coast of Grenada before turning north and motoring up the west
coast to the anchorage outside St George’s harbour.  It was a pleasant
couple of hours and the anchorage was peaceful.  The windlass operated
correctly and anchoring was fuss free.

We got away at 8am the next day and with the mainsail set and engine
running we motor sailed up the west coast of Grenada towards the island of
Carriacou.  This was the first time we had seen the mainsail set since it
had been repaired and the repair didn’t look too obvious and the shape was still
fine.  We held our breaths as we first passed the point at which our engine
had stopped and then the position where the main had ripped over 3 weeks
ago.
The tide was setting strongly to the west as we passed north of Grenada and
we were gaining massively on boats who were under sail only.  Even though
they were travelling faster through the water than us we were able to point more
to the east using the engine to counteract the current.  We just wanted to
get there and decided today was not the day to be purists.
As we passed the small islands and rocks to the north of Grenada we also
skirted around ‘Kick ‘em Jenny’ which is the name of an underwater
volcano.  It was not active but when it is there is enough gas in the sea
for it to affect buoyancy and boats have submerged.
We approached Tyrrel Bay on Carriacou at about half past one and were
anchored about 10 minutes later.  Rob and Rhian from Beyzano were in the
bay and came over to say hello and have a coffee.  Having seen us having to
anchor twice (the first time we ended up too close to another boat) they
declared we must have been showing off our newly working
windlass. |
