Jean-Marie came as promised on Monday afternoon and removed the membrane case and high presure pump from the watermaker to take back to his workshop.

All of the shops and restaurants in the marina closed during the afternoon - it seems that New Year's Eve is a real family affair in the Canaries.  We had a quiet evening and a lovely fillet steak with blue cheese sauce for dinner.  We thought we would be watching a film but found that one of the characteristics of Windows 8 vs Windows 7 is that Microsoft don't bundle software to play DVD's any longer.  All my attempts at downloading suitable software failed although it is fair to say that the wifi at the marina is a little suspect.  We resorted to watching a short programme on our old faithful XP laptop and then went to bed early.  We did notice some fireworks at midnight but they weren't the large co-ordinated affairs you sometimes get in many other places.

On New Year's day we took a 50 minute walk over to Las Canteras, the beach area of Las Palmas.  All across the city the shops and cafe's were shut but there were signs of life at the coast.  A lot of people were 'promenading'.  These were mainly locals plus some cruise ship passengers (identifying bracelets and cruise ship clothes).  It was another grey day and really quite cool but some had what seemed to be their ritual New Year's Day swim - changing on the beach, darting in to the sea, keeping a brave face on whilst they had family hugs and walking out briskly again.  It was nice to see so many families together though.

'Feliz 2013' :-

We strolled along the front, taking in some sand sculptures.  It seems this is a recent development and we were witnessing the ' 7th Annual Show'.

It's being so cheerful that keeps him going.  Some good detail though:-

The thought running through Lin's mind at this moment was 'can we get a move on now because I don't have my fleece with me':-

We did get a move on back along the front to a nice Italian restaurant and had a lovely lunch of gambas in garlic oil and seafood crepes.  We dodged spots of rain on the walk back to the marina but it was a pleasant day.
