Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 May
Mid morning we 'upped anchor' and motored 8
nautical miles to reach Prickly Bay on the south coast of Grenada. After
investigating most of the bay we chose a pretty spot on the eastern
side.
After lunch I took a dinghy ride to check some of
the shoreside facilities which were few and far between since most of the
properties we could see around the bay were not hotels but large private
houses.
The view to the east. This property, which
has a nice pool and restaurant, houses the professors from the Grenada
University of Medicine!
The view to the west:-
On Friday I went to Budget Marine. This is
the best stocked chandlery we've seen in a long time and I was that kid in
a sweet shop. Whilst there I bought the perfect wedding anniversary
present for Lin - a 5hp, 2-stroke Tohatsu outboard engine! I think she
will be so pleased. It should be ready on Monday.
It's has been illegal to sell 2-stroke outboards in
Europe for a few years now because they don't satisfy the environmental
regulations dreamt up in Brussels. The trouble is that 4-stroke engines
are much heavier so we are really happy to be able to get hold
of 2-strokes out here. Even so, this engine weighs enough to
make lowering and lifting to and from the dinghy a bit of a challenge and we
will have to get a small 'jib-crane' to avoid back injuries.
On Saturday we motored along the south
coast and anchored in Clarkes Court Bay and on Sunday I went ashore to
the 'Marina' to watch the Spanish Grand Prix. This was showing at 8am
local time and they were offering a breakfast with coffee. One guy with a
long, unkempt beard walked slowly into the room and promptly ordered a
glass of red wine and made his way to a table. Not bad before 8.30 in the
morning! He was obviously a regular because they were preparing his drink
as he approached the bar. He didn't bother with any food
but seemed happy enough.
Clarkes Court Bay:-
The water in Clarkes Court Bay was rather 'murky'
and not very inviting for swimming so later on Sunday we motored around to
Mount Hartman Bay, or 'Secret Harbour' where the sea was much
clearer. Better than that was the sea temperature which definitely met
with Lin's approval:-
