A few days at anchor

Once Lin had been to the supermarket
on Thursday morning we left the marina and anchored off the
beach in Rodney Bay itself. This is one of the best beaches in St
Lucia. When I first came here - 29 years ago - there was only one hotel
and very little in the area behind it. It's very different now of course
but still a lovely bay.
The view from the boat at anchor:-
On Friday we went ashore to 'The Spinnaker bar',
one of the few places along the beach not attached to a hotel, and used their
internet before having lunch there. In the afternoon we switched into
tourist mode and hired beach chairs and an umbrella and sat amongst the cruise
ship passengers. Very nice.
The view from one of the hotels across to Pidgeon
Island. Our boat is second from the left:-
We stayed on board all day Saturday. We had
been warned that there was a lot of growth in the marina so I swam around the
boat to check. Sure enough, after only 6 nights in the marina, our
waterline was encrusted with small barnacles. These came off reasonably
easily after an hour with a scraper, along with some of the protective
anti-fouling paint of course. Hardly a hardship when the sea is clear and
28 degrees.
The locals enjoying the beach as the sun goes
down:-
On Sunday we took the dinghy into the lagoon past
the marina to drop Lin near the shops for some more provisions (not tins
though!). We met later at the Ocean Restaurant for lunch before heading
back to the boat. On the way in we had noticed that 'Kwispel' was anchored
in the bay. They are the Belgian boat which left Cape Verde the same day
as we did and stayed in touch by email across the Atlantic and also
coordinated communications with 'Sloop John B'. We had sundowners
with them in the evening and compared notes about plans for the hurricane season
before Lin and I returned to our boat for our Sunday Roast!
