Our next port of call was Iles de Salut, 6 miles
off the coast of French Guyana.
We are not sure why they are so names ( islands
of health) as they formed a French penal colony from the mid nineteenth
century.
Up to 1000 prisoners were kept her, some in
solitary confinement, some in 'lunatic asylums' ( prisoner '5039' looks like he
belonged there!)
We were amazed by the flourishing wildlife
including Capuchin monkeys, Agouti ( large tailless rodents), Parrots, Caiman,
Giant lizards etc
