One of the World Arc yachts hit a reef 200 miles east of Cairns last Saturday.

Apparently the reef was not well charted and they struck it at full speed at 4 am in the pitch black.

A rescue was set up by the Australian coastguard and the two on board were winched off safely by helicopter 4 hours later after clinging to the hull which was stranded on a reef and badly holed.

The numbers of yachts continuing in the rally has diminished considerably from the 40 that started and probably only just over 20 will leave Australia to cross the Indian Ocean to South Africa.
