International news channels have reported an earthquake (7.7 on the Richter scale) and a tsunami warning for the coast of Chile. The epicentre was 140 miles away and we felt the quake while eating breakfast on the boat.
Shortly afterwards we received a tsunami warning on our mobile phone from the navy. Puerto Montt is well protected, at the head of a very deep bay, with several islands guarding the approaches and the authorities are expecting a surge of 1-2 metres at high water around 2:30 pm local time.
We will head for high ground around 2 pm as a precaution.
The tsunami warning has just been downgraded to 'precautionary'.
We will post more information later.
