19TH MARCH, 2019 ESPERANZA, VIEQUES ISLAND

This is the larger of the two Spanish Virgin Islands.  We picked up a buoy, which in Frank Virgintino’s cruising guide says are free to prevent anybody destroying the sea bed and coral.  Unfortunately this is not true, we were charged by a guy who met us on the pier and said they were his buoys.  How true this is we don’t know, it may have been a scam as he had no card.  We organised a guide/driver to show us the island for the afternoon, but Jonathan’s phone on T Mobile refused to work when we got to the island so we lost contact with her and although I left messages using my UK iPhone she never picked them up.  Consequently we never got to see the island.  We were rushing a bit as we are 3 weeks behind schedule due to the various mishaps, at the beginning such as waiting for new batteries from the UK, new water maker part from France and my Dengue/Zika virus which laid me up.
Dinner that evening at El Quenepo was very good and friendly.  The island is making a huge effort to get everything up and running again since Hurricane Maria in 2017 and really value your business.
