FROM MYSTIC RIVER DOWN LONG ISLAND SOUND TO NEW YORK.

After leaving the Mystic river we sailed down Long Island Sound towards New York. Calling for one night at Greenwich which is a very upmarket shopping town but not much else.
The motor/sail into East River through Hell’s gate is interesting, fun and scary all at the same time.  You have to get the tide right as the river runs with currents up to 14 knots swirling so you do need a good engine and control.  We sailed passed a large prison with a well fenced exercise area on one of the roofs, a security guard was looking at us through his binoculars so I did the same with ours and waved, he waved back.  On down passed all the amazing NY architecture and buzz of the city, under the bridges including the famous Brooklyn Bridge around the bottom of Manhattan with the Statue of Liberty in the distance then across the bottom of the Hudson River to the marina based in Liberty Park.  That evening we heard there was a jazz concert on in the park near a restaurant so we went over but had not booked a table.  A very nice lady on her own invited us to join her table.  She was in her 80s, very elegant and had had a career in bringing events to the USA from all over the world, mainly concerts and ballet.  We slept well that night ready to be up and about the next morning.
