Day 4 - Hilton Head SC - Fort Pierce Fl

30:23.8N
81:25.8W
An
easy, but cold overnight sail - wind picked up around midnight to set full sails
passing St Simons, St Marys and sighting the lights of St John and Mayport early
morning. Heading in through the breakwaters saw numerous small fishing boats
battling against wind, tide and wash to fish for local Sheepshead - a major
tournament was in play (reportedly 300 boats took part)! Tied up at Morningstar
Mayport Marina by mid-morning in a very strong running tidal flow. By afternoon
the reverse tide swung the rudder and steering wheels violently over to one side
and broke the starboard drive chain!! Instead of a restful afternoon catching up
on sleep the daylight hours were spent chasing down a chain supplier -
fortunately a local "eclectic" motorbike shop and its mechanics were most
helpful, as was the auto-part store down the road. After 2-3 trips to each
store (!) we secured a new chain and pieces from the old chain to
attempt a repair - commandeering the marina RAM Dodge for most of the
afternoon (thank you Morningstar Marina)! Job still not finished
late into the evening, sore fingers and very tired - meant a probable extra
night at the marina....with no solution in sight for Sunday. Phil
