Cast-off heading south on
the ICW. Negotiated numerous bridges (lift, bascule and swing) - in the
first 12 miles plus the Great Bridge Lock and into Abemarle and
Chesapeake Canal (the "Virginia Cut") - very picturesque having left the
industrial Portsmouth behind (SM 0). Onward to our first fixed bridge (65
ft) Interstate 64 Highway - lined up in the middle - just touched the VHF
antenna on the centre lights! We can go on southwards!! Depth became another
concern - maintained at 7ft - not exactly! This was going to be interesting as
we draw 6'6" - guessing that we will brush the mud a few times on this route.
Passing through swamp lands and into North River and Currituck Sound in North
Carolina. Finally at Coinjock (SM 49.5) we tied up alongside the bar with only
one other yacht. The beer and crab dips were very welcome!
