It was time to make some more progress northwards, so we were up early and were soon motor sailing in a light southerly, with just the mainsail. It was a lovely hot, sunny day and the sea state was calm so it was a pleasure to be sailing along wearing shorts and relaxing after the rough passage to Torekov. Matters were helped along by a favourable current and we arrived at Varberg in time for a walk around before tea.

Varberg is quite large and we spurned the big marina in favour of the town harbour. We were only planning to stay one night and thought we could put up with the ferries and industrial activity in favour of easy access to the fortress overlooking the harbour entrance.

It was a bit of a big step up alongside tyres but the Norwegian on the next boat happily sat in his cockpit watching me struggle before we were safely tied up in the well sheltered inner harbour near the many camper vans but a long way from the harbourmasters office and the facilities.

Once we had walked round there and paid at the machine (very few harbourmasters seem to operate at this time of year) it was time to head off past the little beach, being enjoyed by many families, across to the imposing fortress standing on the headland.

  The fortress was used a a prison at the beginning of the 20th century; now youth inhabit the cells;
