We were leaving Gotland for the island of Oland on Thursday and because it was a bit further than some of our more recent passages, we planned to be away early. Unfortunately it must have blown up in the night as, although there wasn’t much wind in the morning, as we left the shelter of the harbour we were hit by a really rough sea from abeam, meaning we were rolling ferociously for most of the passage to Byxelkrok.  Needless to say we had got so used to the calm, waveless conditions, that we hadn’t prepared properly below decks and at first there was quite a lot of crashing and banging as loose items flew round the cabin, but we got that sorted fairly quickly. Still it was a offwind sail, until near the end, when the wind died and we had to motor.

We ate at the restaurant in the harbour and I tried for something typically Swedish – herring with mash and lingon berries

and we had another amazing sunset
