After a leisurely (even by our standards) start to
the day we dropped Skipper's mooring at 10:30 and motored round the reef,
leaving Palm Island to starboard, then sailed under headsail alone with a
bit of help from the engine at the end, to Salt Whistle bay on Mayreu. The bay is
quite small and only the northern end provides much protection from the
swell. We were there earlyish so we found a good place to drop the hook
close to the northern shore in only 2.7m. Mayreu is small, has
only two or three hundred inhabitants living in one village near the middle
of the island. We walked up the steep road to the village and were amply
rewarded for our efforts. The village centre is on the highest point and the
best plots are occupied by the splendid little Catholic Church, socially central
as well as geographically, and the village school. The views over the reefs to
Tobago Cays and the more distant islands of Union and Canouan were
spectacular.
Decided any further exploration (there is one other
road that leads down to Saline Bay) would be too much effort to get back so
settled for the stroll down to a shack on the beach to refresh with a cold beer.
This proved to be a good detour as we also found a nearby shack doing a
mahi-mahi or lobster barbeque that evening, so we signed up.
Back to the boat and time for a cup of tea, short
snooze, shower and change in to evening wear, shorts and tee-shirts without
holes or red wine stains, and back to the beach bar in the dark for supper. An
excellent evening followed. The food was delicious and we were sat on long
trestle tables with a French party (6) who had chartered a cat from
Martinique. They were cousins and spouses living in either
Biarritz or Paris so the Parisians knew Chambourcy.
Quite late when we dinghied back to Moorglade and I
was pleased we had left a light on in the cockpit, as well as the anchor light,
as the wind had shifted slightly which upsets one's orientation -or was it the
Carib?
