A day in Visby
We had planned a day sightseeing in Visby, but first we woke up to the Gotland fire service lowering a diver into the water beside us. We were unsure if this was a training exercise or whether someone had actually dropped something. We hoped that our shower water didn’t fog up his mask! Diver training? later they had a huge code flag A fastened to the lamppost Visby is an old walled city, with several ruined churches and a current cathedral, which is undergoing renovation work, as so many of Sweden’s buildings are. It is also noted for the flowers that grow round peoples’ houses – mainly roses and foxgloves it has to be said. I also thought it should be noted for being built on a hillside. Views around Visby The sheep seems to be the Gotland emblem and these were everywhere The ruined church of St Catherine in the main square Inside the cathedral; the stone ship was for sending thoughts and messages in. They will be despatched (by burning I think) in September And the cathedral outside The view over the town from the hill near the cathedral The wall of the city Flowers round the cottage doors After our tourist bit we went to the supermarket and stocked up with provisions. Thank heavens it was downhill back to the boat Still not many other boats in the harbour And a footnote to an earlier post when we were in the Kiel Canal with a tug and 3 unidentified long things - this link explains their purpose |
