We left the anchorage on Jewell Island just after midday after an enjoyable morning's exploration. The passage to the Saco River was uneventful apart from porpoises and gannet in a feeding frenzy spotted off Richmond Island. We had to motor all the way and while we were not sure about where exactly we would stop for the night we took the easy option and took one of the Biddeford Pool Yacht Club buoys in Wood Island Harbour. The Club launch took us ashore for a look round. There was no activity ashore, the club was empty and walking round the little town revealed a collection of expensive houses many of which were already locked up for the winter. The store was open but its shelves were mostly empty leaving a strange assortment of stock that we and it would appear nobody else was keen to buy. Many of Southern Maine's towns are dominated by the second homes of vacationers.
