The wind abated so, although it was still blowing from the northeast we filled up with water a set off to motor up the Kalmarsund to Borgholm on Oland island. The sun shone brightly but the wind was still cold and there were very few other boats about as we made progress as the chop reduced as the Sound narrowed. One of the boats following us turned out to be Galatea with Douglas on board but he caught us up just before he turned into Kalmar and we continued under the big bridge linking Oland to the mainland, waving hello and goodbye.

Leaving Bergkvara by the Northern passage

Approaches to Kalmar. We weren’t sure what the vessel above was doing but he had cables down either side from little cranes

Kalmar castle and a view of the town

Douglas securing lines before going into Kalmar

The bridge joining Oland to the mainland

The skipper off watch in the channel north of the bridge

You know you’re close when you can see the castle

We arrived in Borgholm without incident although the weather turned cloudy so we were pleased Ted had fixed the Eberspracher while we were in Bergkvara as we were grateful for the warmth it offered. The outer area has 2 large pontoons but there were only 5 other boats there as we tied up and went ashore to check in by machine. There were more boats in the newly developed inner harbour but, in spite of the breeze blowing into the boat, we didn’t feel inclined to go and take up one of the final spaces with the Germans and Danes already there.

Approaching the harbour. The big hotel also runs the guest harbour

Plenty of spots to choose from
